▸ Lightshot alternative · region capture, zero upload

The Lightshot alternative that keeps captures off public URLs

Lightshot's signature move was also its privacy trap: capture a region and it uploads the image to a server and hands you a short, publicly reachable share link. Development stopped around July 2024, and the tool carries a history of security and privacy concerns around those guessable links. SnapLocal is the local replacement — select an area, annotate, and destroy sensitive pixels with a true mosaic, all processed on your device. It declares zero host_permissions, needs no account, sends no telemetry, and Pro is a one-time $19 buyout, never a subscription.

Lightshot alternative, answered

Does Lightshot upload screenshots to a server?

Yes — that is exactly how its share-link feature works. When you capture, Lightshot pushes the image to its servers and returns a short public URL. Anything in the frame, including a password or a private message, can end up hosted on a third party. SnapLocal declares zero host_permissions, so Chrome itself blocks any network call — your capture is stored only in chrome.storage.local.

Is Lightshot discontinued?

Active development stopped around July 2024. An unmaintained capture tool that still uploads to public links is a poor bet for anything sensitive — no fixes are coming, and the share-link exposure remains. Our Lightshot vs SnapLocal breakdown walks through the two architectures in detail.

Is there a Lightshot alternative that works offline?

SnapLocal is browser-native and works fully offline: select a region, annotate with arrows, boxes, text, and a true pixel-destructive mosaic, then export a local PNG or JPEG. There is no server, no share link, and no cloud copy of your screenshot.

How much does SnapLocal cost?

Free to use, including unlimited mosaic redaction — the feature most tools lock away. Pro is a one-time $19 buyout, never a subscription, backed by a 30-day no-questions-asked refund. Its full-page sibling SnapPage is a one-time $15 buyout.
